THIS WEEK GoTo.now vs. TinyURL: An In-Depth URL Shortener Showdown Read this week's article →

Change, organize, and control links after you publish

Keep the same public link while you update its destination, back-half, access, redirect behavior, and lifecycle rules.

What you can do

Each capability below is available in the current GoTo.now application.

Editable back-halves

Choose a new memorable slug without breaking the old URL. GoTo.now keeps the former short link as a working alias.

Redirect status control

Use 301 or 308 for permanent moves, or 302 or 307 when the destination may change. Method-preserving 307 and 308 are available for advanced workflows.

Pause and resume

Stop a smart link immediately and send visitors to its fallback. Resume from the same settings without recreating the public URL.

Per-link permissions

Give an existing GoTo.now user viewer or editor access to one link without exposing the rest of your account.

Folders and tags

Group related links into folders, add reusable tags, search the inventory, and perform bulk organization from one screen.

Large CSV migration

Import up to 10,000 links from a UTF-8 CSV and export your complete inventory with slugs, domains, destinations, folders, and tags.

A campaign name changes after launch

A retailer has already printed /spring-sale, but the promotion is renamed Midyear Event. The owner changes the primary back-half, keeps the original URL as an alias, leaves the redirect temporary while destinations are still changing, tags the link retail and print, and gives an agency editor access to that link only.

What this changes: Both printed and newly shared URLs continue working, while ownership, organization, and editing rights remain explicit.

Is this the right tool?

Use it when

  • A public URL is already printed or widely shared
  • Several people need limited access to one link
  • A migration needs folders, tags, aliases, or CSV import

Choose another approach when

  • You only need a one-off anonymous redirect
  • You want an old alias to stop resolving immediately

How it works

1

Open an owned link

Choose Links in the dashboard and open Smart routing for the link you want to control.

2

Change only what you need

Edit the back-half, destination, redirect code, lifecycle controls, or direct collaborators.

3

Save without re-sharing

Existing placements continue to work. Alias history preserves an older back-half after a rename.

Manage your links

Behavior worth knowing

  • A back-half rename creates a new redirect and retains the previous redirect as an alias.
  • Permanent redirects may be cached by browsers and intermediaries; use 302 while a campaign is still changing.
  • Direct permissions require the collaborator to have a GoTo.now account.

Link Management FAQs

Will changing a back-half break the old link?
No. The old short URL remains active as an alias, while the dashboard treats the new URL as the primary link.
How many rows can I import?
One import accepts a UTF-8 CSV up to 10 MB and processes up to 10,000 rows.
What can a link viewer do?
A viewer can inspect the link and its reporting. An editor can also update the link. Only the owner controls direct permissions.
