Analytics

What gets tracked when someone clicks

Each click or scan records standard web request data: the time, the referring page (where the click came from), the visitor's browser/user agent, and a coarse location derived from the IP address (country and city level).

The four data points, spelled out

  • Time - When the click happened, which feeds your day-by-day chart.
  • Referring page - Where the click came from, so you can tell your newsletter apart from your social posts.
  • Browser / user agent - Powers the device and browser breakdowns.
  • Coarse location - Country and city level only, never a street address or exact position.

An example click

Someone in Lisbon taps your link inside a tweet on their phone. Your dashboard gains one click at that timestamp, sourced from twitter.com, on a mobile browser, from Portugal. That's the whole record - Enough to judge a campaign, nothing that identifies the person.

What we deliberately don't do

What we don't do: plant tracking cookies on people who click, follow them around the web, or sell any of it. Analytics exist so the link's owner can understand their own campaigns - Details are in the Privacy Policy.

This is also why your stats are private to you. The person clicking isn't profiled, and the numbers the click produces are only visible behind your login. It's measurement, not surveillance: you learn which of your channels work, and the visitor just gets taken where they wanted to go.
